Artificial harbour at Arromanches
Artificial harbour at Arromanches

Visit the Normandy beaches, including Arromanches, site of one of the two artificial harbors built by the Allies during the Second World War. See the remains of the harbor, constructed in an astonishing technical feat just 3 days after D-Day , and which was used to land over 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles and 4 million tonnes of supplies during the subsequent the 10 months.

After Arromanches, stop at Longues Sur Mer, where scenes from 'The Longest Day' were filmed, and see the cliff-top German artillery battery, complete with 150 mm guns and firing command post.

Next, make for Omaha beach, where the American suffered their heaviest D-Day casualties. You will also be able to visit the American Cemetery, the final resting place of 9387 soldiers.

Finally, your D-Day private tour will take you on to the spectacular Pointe du Hoc, stormed by Colonel James Rudder and the 2nd battalion of Rangers at dawn on D-Day. Overlooking Omaha beach is the dagger-shaped, granite Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument, erected in 1960 by the French in honor of the American troops who scaled the cliffs and took the German artillery.

The church of Sainte Mère Eglise became internationally-known when paratrooper John Steele became caught on its spire, remaining there for some hours. A replica still hangs there, while you can also see stained glass windows and numerous other monuments erected in honor of the D-Day forces, especially those of the 4th and 90th US divisions, as well as some of the original vehicles used in the landings.
